Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
