Jon Ruben confessed to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on Friday

A person who laced sweets with sedative and distributed them to children at a youth camp in the region has confessed to sexual crimes against two boys both between nine and ten.

The defendant was detained after eight minors and an older person became sick at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at the courthouse on Friday.

Nevertheless, he disputed one particular crime he was accused of, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

Ruben was remanded in custody prior to a further hearing on 28 November.

'Treat game'

The prosecutor, presenting evidence, outlined the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.

She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were participating in a youth camp which he managed.

The man played a "candy game" with the minors, the prosecutor explained, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the defendant had engaged in this activity with the boys "over an extended period", and children had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the man had been able to explain this for many years as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had suspicions in recently.

The legal representative continued: "This year his stepson had concerns about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."

The prosecutor stated objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were discovered, and his stepson alerted the police about his concerns.

She said the man proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"The police had not gone out by that stage," she stated further.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, earlier informed that it was investigating the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor said the children were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the family member notified the police again.

She said Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
