Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
